A yellow fever certificate may be required for your journey, depending on the destination and route. For a first vaccination, the certificate becomes valid after 10 days and is then valid for life. Checking the paperwork and deciding whether vaccination is medically suitable are separate parts of the assessment.

At a glance

  • The certificate’s formal name is the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP).
  • First-vaccination certificates become valid after 10 days.
  • Lifetime validity also applies to older valid yellow fever certificates showing a 10-year expiry.
  • Stopovers and previous destinations can affect certificate requirements.
  • Lost records and medical exemptions need assessment; neither is resolved by simply buying a document.

Do you need a certificate? Check the whole route

Look at the TravelHealthPro country information for every stage of the journey, including your return route. Read the certificate section as well as the health recommendations. Some rules depend on arrival from, or transit through, another country.

Do not assume that every transit triggers the same rule. The relevant country guidance and details of the connection matter. Keep the airport name, duration of transit and onward route ready when asking for advice.

NaTHNaC’s yellow fever guidance explains that a certificate requirement does not necessarily mean there is yellow fever risk at the destination. Conversely, absence of an entry requirement does not establish that vaccination is unnecessary for personal protection.

Check the guidance again before departure if the route changes. An added stopover is a good reason to revisit the question.

Travel health essentials and vaccination planning
Plan around your itinerary, previous vaccinations and personal health.

How does the 10-day rule work?

After a first yellow fever vaccination, the certificate is not immediately valid. The NaTHNaC ICVP guidance specifies a 10-day interval from vaccination.

Give the centre your relevant entry date and ask it to confirm the validity date written on the certificate. If the dates do not leave enough time, discuss the implications before proceeding with the journey.

Booking confirmation, proof of payment or a letter saying you plan to be vaccinated does not establish that a valid ICVP is already in place. Keep the actual document with your travel papers.

Does an old 10-year certificate need renewing?

A valid yellow fever certificate is now valid for life, including certificates originally issued with a 10-year expiry. Do not cross out or alter the old dates yourself. NaTHNaC explains the lifetime rule and advises against altering existing certificates.

This is a document rule. It is distinct from a clinician’s assessment of whether a further dose is advisable for particular medical circumstances or future exposure. The NHS yellow fever vaccination guidance describes a small group of travellers who may need further advice about another dose.

Take the existing certificate to the consultation rather than assuming its printed expiry means you must start again.

What if your certificate is lost or your name has changed?

Contact the original vaccination provider first and ask for the recorded vaccination details. Bring any copy you hold and identification showing your current name.

A designated centre may be able to issue a replacement where an adequate record of the previous vaccination is available. NaTHNaC’s replacement guidance explains the evidence needed, including the original vaccination date and vaccine details.

If the record cannot be established, the centre must assess the next step. A recollection that you were vaccinated years ago is not enough to guarantee replacement. Allow time for records to be located rather than leaving this until the day before departure.

Do not edit a certificate yourself to resolve a name difference. Ask the centre what documentation it needs to check the change.

What if vaccination is not suitable for you?

Yellow fever vaccination requires a health assessment. Tell the clinician about immune-system conditions or treatment, previous thymus problems or surgery, severe allergies, pregnancy, breastfeeding and previous vaccine reactions. Age also matters, particularly for older travellers. This is not an exhaustive screening list; the centre will ask further questions. See NaTHNaC’s yellow fever precautions and contraindications.

A medical letter of exemption may be appropriate in some circumstances, but it is not the same as a vaccination certificate and does not protect against infection. NaTHNaC advises that its acceptance is at the discretion of the destination country. Relevant embassy or consular advice may be needed before travel.

The purpose of the discussion is to make a safe decision about the whole journey. It may involve specialist advice or reconsidering the route, rather than simply producing paperwork.

Before you leave: a document checklist

  • Check your name and personal details against your passport.
  • Ask the centre to explain the certificate’s validity dates.
  • Keep the original accessible with your travel documents.
  • Store a secure copy separately in case the original is lost.
  • Recheck requirements if your itinerary changes.

If you notice an error, contact the issuing centre promptly. Let it decide how to correct the record properly.

Travel health, vaccination records and your next step

Can I have the vaccination on the day I fly?

A first certificate will not become valid that day. Share the complete itinerary so the centre can assess the dates and your health needs. A last-minute appointment cannot remove the validity interval.

My certificate says it expired. Should I throw it away?

Keep it and bring it with you. The lifetime-validity rule may apply even though the old certificate shows a 10-year expiry. Do not change the document yourself.

Will a photo of the certificate be enough?

Keep a photo as a backup, but carry the original rather than relying on your phone for entry checks. A copy can also help when requesting replacement if the original is lost.

Can you guarantee an exemption will be accepted?

No. A medical exemption needs a clinical basis, and the receiving country decides whether to accept it. Discuss the route and relevant official advice before you rely on an exemption for travel.
