What is Bindex®
Bindex is an innovative medical device that measures the cortical bone thickness of your shinbone (tibia) using safe ultrasound technology.
By combining this quick measurement with your specific clinical risk factors, the Bindex system provides a highly accurate assessment of your bone mineral density (BMD) and estimates your osteoporosis risk.
What is a Bindex® Bone Health Scan?
Bindex® is a portable, radiation-free ultrasound device used to assess bone health and the probability of osteoporosis.
It measures the cortical thickness of the tibia (shinbone) and combines this with key patient information to calculate a Density Index, which estimates bone mineral density at the hip.
How does the Bindex® scan work?
A small ultrasound probe is placed against the upper part of your shinbone. The measurement is quick, painless and does not use X-rays or ionising radiation.
The Bindex® software analyses the measurement and generates a result during your appointment.
How accurate is Bindex®?
Bindex® has been clinically validated against DXA, the standard hospital-based method used to measure bone mineral density.
The manufacturer reports validated thresholds designed to achieve approximately 90% sensitivity and 90% specificity when identifying patients who may have osteoporosis or require further investigation.
It is better to describe this as 90% sensitivity and specificity rather than simply saying “90% accurate”, which can be misleading.
Does Bindex® replace a DXA scan?
Not in every patient.
Bindex® can help identify people with a low or high probability of osteoporosis and those who may benefit from further assessment. Some patients will still require a hospital-based DXA scan for additional investigation or confirmation.
Clinical studies suggest Bindex® may reduce the number of patients who need onward DXA assessment.
Is the Bindex® scan safe?
Yes. Bindex® uses ultrasound rather than X-rays, so there is no ionising radiation exposure during the measurement.
The scan is non-invasive, painless and normally takes less than a minute to perform.
What will my Bindex® result show?
Your result helps indicate the probability of osteoporosis based on your Density Index.
The result is interpreted alongside your individual risk factors, medical history and other relevant clinical information rather than being considered in isolation.

Radiation-free ultrasound
Bindex uses pulse-echo ultrasound technology rather than X-rays. The measurement is taken at the shin, so you won’t be exposed to ionising radiation during the assessment.

What is a Bindex scan?
A Bindex® scan is a quick, radiation-free ultrasound assessment that measures the cortical bone thickness at your tibia (shinbone). The device combines this measurement with your age, height, and weight to calculate a Density Index — a proxy for hip bone mineral density (BMD) as measured by DXA. It is designed to help identify your probability of osteoporosis in around 20 minutes.
Is Bindex the same as a DXA scan?
No, they are different tests. DXA is the established gold standard for measuring bone mineral density using low-dose X-rays at the hip and spine, and is used for formal diagnosis and monitoring. Bindex® is a portable, radiation-free ultrasound device used as a first-line risk assessment to identify whether further investigation with DXA may be appropriate. Bindex® does not replace DXA where a DXA is clinically required.
Does the scan hurt?
No, the scan is completely painless. It is a non-invasive ultrasound measurement performed on your shin, with no injections or needles involved. The transducer is simply moved over the measurement site after ultrasound gel is applied.
Does Bindex use radiation?
No. Bindex® uses pulse-echo ultrasound technology, which is radiation-free. Unlike DXA, which uses low-dose X-rays, Bindex® requires no special radiation protection facilities and is safe for repeated use
How long does the appointment take?
The Bindex® scan itself takes under 30 seconds to perform. At Puri Health, the full appointment — including your consultation and discussion of results — takes around 20 minutes in total
Will I receive my result immediately?
Yes. Your result is available during your appointment. The Bindex® software instantly displays a colour-coded result based on your Density Index: green indicates low risk, yellow indicates intermediate risk (DXA recommended), and red indicates high risk (treatment may be initiated). Your clinician will explain what your result means and discuss appropriate next steps with you before you leave.
What happens if my result suggests increased risk?
If your Bindex® result falls in the intermediate (yellow) range, your clinician will typically recommend a follow-up DXA scan for a more detailed assessment. If your result is in the high-risk (red) range, treatment may be initiated without a confirmatory DXA scan, particularly if additional risk factors are present. In all cases, your clinician will explain the next step clearly and provide personalised advice on maintaining your bone health.
Can men have a Bindex assessment?
Yes. While osteoporosis is more common in women, men can also develop the condition. Bindex® is suitable for both men and women aged 40 and over who wish to understand their bone health. The assessment is equally effective regardless of sex.
