What is Mounjaro®?
Mounjaro® is a prescription-only, once-weekly injection containing the active ingredient tirzepatide. It is used for weight management and type 2 diabetes. It works by mimicking two gut hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) to reduce appetite, slow digestion, and help you feel fuller for longer, which leads to significant weight loss when combined with diet and exercise.
Who is suitable for weight loss treatment?
Treatment is generally suitable for adults who are committed to making lifestyle changes. Clinical eligibility is typically based on having a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or above (or a lower BMI if you have a weight-related health condition), or a BMI of 30 or above for obesity. A full clinical assessment is required to ensure the treatment is safe and appropriate for you
How much weight can I expect to lose?
Clinical trials have shown significant results. On average, patients can expect to lose around 20–22% of their starting body weight over a period of approximately 68 to 72 weeks when using the highest tolerated dose alongside diet and exercise. Individual results will vary based on your starting weight, dose, and lifestyle factors.
What are the side effects?
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal and tend to be mild to moderate. They include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and constipation. These effects are most common at the beginning of treatment and during dose increases, and they often improve as your body adjusts to the medication. Serious side effects are rare.
How long does treatment take?
Mounjaro® is not a fixed-course treatment. Most clinical data shows that patients benefit from at least 4–6 months of continuous therapy to see significant fat loss and establish new eating patterns. The full therapeutic benefit often emerges after 16–20 weeks once a maintenance dose is reached. Treatment duration is reviewed regularly with your clinician
Do I need a GP referral?

Can I use Mounjaro® if I have other health conditions?
This depends on the specific condition. Mounjaro® is not suitable for everyone. It is contraindicated if you have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). It also requires careful consideration if you have severe gastrointestinal diseases, pancreatitis, or severe kidney or liver disease. A full medical assessment is essential.

Costs vary by provider and dose. For context, private clinic prices for Mounjaro® in the UK can range from approximately £129 to £300+ per month, depending on the dose and the pharmacy. Many clinics charge an initial consultation fee (which may be separate) before prescribing.
