What is TRT?
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a medical treatment for men who have clinically confirmed low testosterone (hypogonadism). It aims to restore testosterone levels to a normal range, which may help improve symptoms such as low energy, reduced libido, low mood, and loss of muscle mass.
What are the symptoms of low testosterone?
Symptoms can include constant tiredness even after sleep, a noticeable decrease in sex drive, weaker or fewer erections, low mood or irritability, loss of muscle mass, increased body fat, and poor concentration or brain fog.
How is low testosterone diagnosed?
We base diagnosis on your symptoms, medical history, and blood results, not symptoms alone. We may start with a simple testosterone screening test, but men progressing towards treatment usually require comprehensive venous blood testing and clinical review.
What does the comprehensive blood test check?
A comprehensive assessment may include total testosterone, SHBG, calculated free testosterone, LH, FSH, prolactin, and broader health markers such as a full blood count, liver function, kidney function, lipids, HbA1c, and PSA, where clinically appropriate. The exact tests will depend on your age, symptoms and medical history.
Why might I need more than one blood test?
Testosterone levels naturally fluctuate and can be affected by factors such as sleep, illness and the time of day. A low or borderline result may therefore need confirmation with a follow-up morning blood test before treatment is considered. Numan and Voy both use a staged testing pathway for this reason.
What treatments are available for low testosterone?
Where TRT is clinically appropriate, testosterone can be prescribed in different formulations, including injections and topical preparations. The most appropriate treatment depends on your clinical assessment, preferences, response and monitoring requirements.
Will TRT affect my fertility?
It can. Testosterone therapy can suppress the body’s own testosterone production and reduce sperm production. If you are trying for a baby now or may want children in the future, this should be discussed before treatment begins. Bramley also makes fertility planning a specific part of its TRT assessment.
Can TRT help with erectile dysfunction?
If erectile dysfunction is partly related to confirmed testosterone deficiency, restoring testosterone to an appropriate range may help some men. However, ED has many possible causes, so testosterone treatment will not necessarily resolve it and other assessment or treatment may still be required.
Who is suitable for TRT?
TRT is suitable for adult men (18+) who have both symptoms of low testosterone and biochemically confirmed low levels on two separate blood tests. It is not suitable for men with certain conditions, such as severe heart failure, prostate or male breast cancer, or those with excessively thick blood (high haematocrit).
What are the benefits of TRT?
For men with confirmed hypogonadism, TRT is associated with significant improvements in libido, erectile function, lean body mass, bone mineral density, and overall quality of life. It can also improve mood, energy levels, and metabolic risk factors.
Are there any risks or side effects?
Common side effects include acne, mood swings, fluid retention, and gynecomastia (breast tissue growth), though these are generally manageable. More serious risks require monitoring, including potential effects on prostate health and an increase in red blood cell production (which can thicken the blood).
Do I need to attend in person?
This depends on the clinic. While some services can be delivered via telehealth, an in-person consultation is often required, especially for an initial evaluation. Testosterone is a controlled substance in many regions, and in-person assessment may be a regulatory requirement for prescribing.
How do I know if I might have low testosterone?
Symptoms can include reduced libido, fewer morning erections, erectile dysfunction, low energy, reduced strength, changes in body composition and low mood. These symptoms are not specific to testosterone deficiency, so diagnosis requires appropriate blood testing alongside a clinical assessment.
How long does TRT take to work?
Response varies between individuals. Some men notice changes in symptoms such as libido, energy or wellbeing within the first few weeks, while other effects may take several months. Assess treatment over time rather than judging it after only a few days.
What monitoring will I need while taking TRT?
TRT requires ongoing clinical review and blood monitoring. Depending on your circumstances, this may include testosterone levels, full blood count and haematocrit, PSA where appropriate, blood pressure and other relevant health markers. Treatment may be adjusted according to your results, symptoms and any side effects.
I am already receiving TRT elsewhere. Can I transfer to Puri Pharmacy?
