Insect bites or stings are not usually serious and will improve in a few days. Sometimes they can become infected or cause a serious allergic reaction.

The most common symptoms of an insect bite or sting are:
- Pain where you were bitten or stung
- A small, swollen lump on the skin
- The skin may look red

Insect bites can sometimes become infected. Symptoms of an infection may include:
- Redness of skin
- Pain or tenderness to the area
- Swelling of skin
- Skin surrounding the bite feels hot to touch

If you are pregnant, we will refer you straight to your GP.
Most bites and stings are not serious and will get better within a few hours or days, and do not need treatment with antibiotics.
If you require antibiotics, our pharmacist can offer you the recommended treatment.
