What can an ultrasound scan assess?

Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of organs and structures inside the body.

Depending on the scan selected, ultrasound may help assess:

  • Gallstones
  • Some liver abnormalities
  • Kidney stones
  • Some kidney or bladder abnormalities
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Structural changes within the abdomen or pelvis
  • Findings that may require further medical investigation

The quality and usefulness of the examination may depend on your anatomy, preparation, symptoms and the structures being assessed.

What can an ultrasound scan not do?

An ultrasound is one form of clinical investigation. It cannot:

  • Guarantee a diagnosis
  • Rule out every medical condition
  • Reliably assess every part of the stomach or bowel
  • Replace a GP or specialist medical consultation
  • Replace blood tests, CT scans, MRI scans or endoscopy where these are required
  • Provide treatment or prescribe medication

If the findings require further assessment, you may be advised to contact your GP, another healthcare professional or an appropriate specialist.

No GP referral required

You do not usually need a GP referral to request one of the listed ultrasound scans.

All bookings remain subject to a suitability assessment. We may recommend a different scan or another healthcare pathway if the requested examination is not appropriate for your symptoms or circumstances.

This is not an emergency service

Do not wait for a private ultrasound appointment if you have:

  • Severe or rapidly worsening pain
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Vomiting blood
  • Black stools
  • Collapse or fainting
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Heavy or uncontrolled bleeding
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Another symptom requiring urgent medical assessment

Use NHS 111, an urgent treatment centre or call 999 where appropriate.
