An abdominal ultrasound may be used to assess structures within the upper abdomen, including:

Appointment length: Approximately 30 minutes
Preparation: Do not eat for six hours before your scan. You may drink water and should continue taking regular medicines unless advised otherwise.

The examination usually begins with an external ultrasound. An internal ultrasound may be offered where clinically appropriate and will only be performed with your explicit consent.

Preparation: Drink approximately one litre of still water one hour before your appointment and avoid emptying your bladder.
