Wegovy: evidence, safety and questions for your prescriber
Wegovy contains semaglutide, a prescription-only medicine used for weight management alongside nutrition and physical activity. This guide explains questions to raise with a prescriber rather than recommending a medicine for everyone.
Bring your treatment history, symptoms and questions to the review.
What does Wegovy do?
Semaglutide acts at GLP-1 receptors and can help regulate appetite. Clinical-trial averages do not predict one person’s outcome. Ask which findings apply to people with your health history and what a meaningful benefit would look like for you.
Who may be considered?
The adult weight-management indication includes an initial BMI of at least 30, or at least 27 with a weight-related health condition. A clinician must also consider your medical history, other medicines, pregnancy plans and whether treatment is appropriate. The licence and a service’s own assessment criteria are different things.
Understand the safety plan
Gastrointestinal effects such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and constipation can occur. Symptoms are not always mild. Discuss symptoms that persist, affect drinking or interfere with daily life. Severe, persistent abdominal pain needs urgent medical assessment. Read the leaflet supplied with your medicine for the full warnings and instructions.
Prepare for a consultation
Bring your medicine list, health history and previous treatment details.
Discuss expected benefits, risks, costs and practical follow-up.
Agree what to do if treatment is not tolerated or is not meeting your goals.
A clear record supports an individual care plan.

Evidence, safety and your next step
How should I judge whether a treatment is right for me?
Look beyond a headline weight-loss percentage. Ask how the evidence fits your health, what monitoring is planned and what alternatives are available. An assessment should leave you with a clear next step.
Discuss your weight-management options
An assessment considers your health, medicines, goals and follow-up needs. It does not guarantee a prescription.
