What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is swelling of the lining of the sinuses. It commonly follows a respiratory infection and can make the nose feel blocked.

Types of Sinusitis

Acute Sinusitis: Short-term infection lasting up to four weeks, often caused by a cold or bacterial infection.

Chronic Sinusitis: Persistent inflammation lasting more than 12 weeks, often associated with allergies or structural issues in the sinuses.

Recurrent Sinusitis: Multiple episodes of sinusitis occur several times a year.

Common Causes of Sinusitis

Infections and other contributors

Viruses commonly cause sinusitis. Symptoms alone do not reliably identify bacteria. Allergy, irritation and structural problems can also contribute to persistent or recurrent symptoms.

What to tell the clinician

Describe when symptoms started, whether they improved before worsening, and whether episodes keep returning. Include allergy patterns, medicines and treatments already tried. These details are more useful than deciding for yourself that an antibiotic is needed.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms may include nasal blockage or discharge, facial pressure, reduced smell, headache and fever. Yellow or green mucus does not by itself prove a bacterial infection.

Seek urgent GP advice or NHS 111 if very unwell, symptoms worsen, pain relief does not help, or you have a weakened immune system. Do not wait for a routine booking.

Treatment Options for Sinusitis

Rest, suitable pain relief and saline products may help with symptoms. Check suitability and instructions with a pharmacist, particularly for children or when taking other medicines. Follow safe preparation instructions for nasal rinses; avoid bowls of boiling water for steam inhalation.

Ask what each product is intended to help with and how long to use it. Avoid repeatedly adding remedies without reviewing the plan.
