Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy

Why Hundreds Are Switching in 2025

From September 2025, the monthly cost of Mounjaro® (tirzepatide) will rise to £160–£320 per pen, compared to the significantly lower prices at launch.

This sharp increase has left many patients asking:

“Can I afford to stay on Mounjaro?”

“Should I switch to a more cost-effective option like Wegovy (semaglutide)?”

The good news: yes, you can switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy but it must be done safely under medical supervision.

What Are Mounjaro and Wegovy?

Mounjaro (Tirzepatide)

  • Dual action: targets both GLP-1 and GIP receptors

  • Strong appetite suppression & improved blood sugar control

  • Clinical trials show average body weight loss up to 22.5% over 72 weeks

Wegovy (Semaglutide)

  • Targets GLP-1 receptors only

  • Licensed in the UK for obesity and cardiovascular protection

  • STEP trials show 15–21% body weight loss

  • A new 7.2mg dose is expected in late 2025, with results potentially matching Mounjaro

Both treatments are once-weekly injections, prescribed alongside healthy diet and lifestyle changes.

Can You Switch from Mounjaro to Wegovy?

Yes, but only under medical supervision.

You cannot inject both drugs together, and doses are not directly interchangeable. The safe switch looks like this:

  1. Take your final Mounjaro dose as usual.

  2. Wait 7 days (washout period).

  3. Restart Wegovy at 0.25mg weekly.

  4. Titrate slowly every 4 weeks: 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, 2.4mg.

  5. Higher doses (7.2mg) may become available in late 2025.

Why Can’t You Switch Dose for Dose?

Although both belong to the GLP-1 medicine family, their strength and action differ:

  • Mounjaro: Dual action (GLP-1 + GIP), stronger potency

  • Wegovy: GLP-1 only

  • Different half-lives: meaning they stay in the body for different lengths of time

Switching mg-for-mg could cause severe nausea, vomiting, or side effects.

Think of it like moving from spirits to wine, you can’t just match the same measure.

What Results Can You Expect After Switching?

Who Shouldn’t Switch?

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women

  • History of pancreatitis

  • Severe gastrointestinal disease

  • Allergy to semaglutide

  • Current use of another GLP-1 medicine

Do We Recommend Switching Only Because of Price?

No. At Puri Pharmacy, we never push patients to change treatment based on cost alone.

Every consultation is personalised to you considering your:

  • Medical history and current health conditions

  • Weight loss progress so far

  • Side effect profile and tolerance

  • Lifestyle and long-term health goals

While rising prices may prompt many patients to explore alternatives, our role is to ensure you receive the most effective, safe, and sustainable treatment for your individual needs.

Some patients will remain on Mounjaro, others may transition to Wegovy, but the decision is always made together with you.

Switching from Mounjaro to Wegovy

No, wait 7 days between your last Mounjaro dose and your first Wegovy dose.

From September 2025, Mounjaro costs between £160–£320 per pen, while Wegovy remains a more cost-effective option for many patients. However, treatment choice should be based on individual health needs, not just price.

Clinical trials show that Mounjaro may deliver slightly greater average weight loss (around 22.5%), while Wegovy achieves 15–21%. With the new 7.2mg Wegovy dose expected in late 2025, results are likely to be very similar.

  1. Take your final Mounjaro injection.

  2. Wait 7 days (washout period).

  3. Begin Wegovy at 0.25mg once weekly.

  4. Increase the dose gradually every 4 weeks (0.5mg → 1mg → 1.7mg → 2.4mg).

  5. Higher doses up to 7.2mg may be available in late 2025.

Some patients notice a short plateau of 2–3 weeks while the body adjusts, but long-term results with Wegovy remain strong, up to 21% weight loss when used correctly.

  • Mounjaro: dual action on GLP-1 + GIP receptors, often stronger appetite suppression.
  • Wegovy: GLP-1 only, licensed in the UK for obesity and heart protection, with fewer side effects in many patients.
