If your club has offered cardiac screening, you may be wondering what the test involves. A resting ECG is usually quick and painless, but the recording is only one part of the process.

Understanding the appointment and reporting arrangements helps you arrive prepared.

What is an ECG?

An electrocardiogram records your heart’s electrical activity, including its rate and rhythm. “12-lead” refers to different views of that activity, rather than twelve separate tests.

A resting ECG is recorded while you lie still. It is different from an exercise ECG or a monitor worn over a longer period.

Before your appointment

Complete the requested questionnaire carefully. Include relevant symptoms, medical conditions, medicines and family history.

Wear a top that is easy to remove. Avoid applying lotions, oils or talcum powder to your chest before the test, as these can affect electrode adhesion.

Contact the team beforehand if you need accessibility support or would like to discuss a chaperone.

During the recording

You will need to expose your chest so electrodes can be positioned correctly. Chest and limb electrodes pick up the electrical signals your heart produces while you rest.

Puri Pharmacy uses the portable QT Medical PCA500 system through the Cardiologic pathway.

No electricity is passed into your body. Removing the adhesive electrodes can cause minor discomfort, and some people experience temporary skin irritation.

A resting ECG recording is followed by clinical interpretation; it is different from a wearable monitoring patch.

Who interprets the recording?

A UK cardiologist reviews your recording through the Cardiologic pathway.

The recording itself may take only a few minutes, but that doesn’t mean you’ll receive a final result immediately. Puri Pharmacy confirms the expected reporting timeframe and how it will provide results before booking.

What if further tests are recommended?

An unusual finding does not automatically establish a diagnosis. Further assessment may be needed to understand it.

An ECG records electrical activity; an echocardiogram examines the heart using ultrasound. These are different tests. An echocardiogram is not included in Puri Pharmacy’s club ECG screening price.

What should you do after screening?

Follow the advice provided with your result. Do not treat screening as clearance to play, and seek medical advice about symptoms even if the recording is reported as normal.

What should I check before booking my ECG?

Ask what the appointment includes, who interprets the recording, when you should expect a report and who will explain any recommended follow-up. Tell the team about symptoms and family history. Understanding the next step is as important as having the recording.

Arrange your next step

Tell us your preferred location and dates, or your club’s approximate participant numbers. We will confirm suitability, availability, the fee and reporting arrangements before booking. Please do not put medical details in the enquiry form.
